Sea Moss and Bladderwrack: Benefits, Dose and Who Should Avoid It

Akasha Sea Moss Vitality Blend Capsules bottle with tropical fruit

Why do people take sea moss and bladderwrack together? Sea moss is a red seaweed and bladderwrack is a brown seaweed, so together they give a broader mix of ocean minerals, including iodine. The pairing became popular as a daily "ocean multivitamin." It can be a good fit for many people, but both are high in iodine, so the dose and your thyroid health matter.

What is bladderwrack?

Bladderwrack (Fucus vesiculosus) is a brown seaweed that grows on the coasts of the North Atlantic and the Baltic Sea. It gets its name from the small air pockets, or "bladders," that help it float. It was one of the first natural sources of iodine ever used, back in the 1800s.

Bladderwrack contains iodine, minerals such as magnesium and calcium, and a fiber called fucoidan, which researchers are studying for its antioxidant properties.

Sea moss vs bladderwrack: what's the difference?

  • Type: sea moss is a red seaweed; bladderwrack is a brown seaweed.
  • Fiber: sea moss is rich in carrageenan, the fiber that makes it gel. Bladderwrack contains alginate and fucoidan.
  • Iodine: both are sources, and brown seaweeds such as bladderwrack are often higher.
  • Taste: sea moss is mild. Bladderwrack is stronger and more "of the sea," which is why most people take it in capsules.

What are the benefits of taking them together?

Here's the honest picture. Most research on these seaweeds is from lab and animal studies, and large human trials on the combination don't exist yet. What we can say with confidence:

  • Both are natural sources of iodine, which your thyroid needs to make the hormones that help regulate energy.*
  • Their fibers act as prebiotics, food for the good bacteria in your gut.*
  • Together they add a range of trace minerals to your diet.

Many formulas also add burdock root, a root vegetable rich in inulin, another prebiotic fiber. That's the classic "sea moss, bladderwrack and burdock" trio.

How much should you take?

Follow the label and take only one seaweed product a day. Our Sea Moss Vitality Blend Capsules deliver, in two capsules:

  • 500 mg Irish sea moss
  • 500 mg organic burdock root
  • 400 mg organic bladderwrack
  • 5 mg BioPerine black pepper extract to support absorption

Take them with water, ideally with a meal. One bottle is a month.

Who should avoid sea moss and bladderwrack?

  • People with a thyroid condition or on thyroid medication. Iodine can affect thyroid function, so talk to your doctor first.
  • People who are pregnant or breastfeeding. Ask your doctor or midwife.
  • People on blood thinners or with a bleeding disorder. Bladderwrack may slow blood clotting, so stop at least two weeks before surgery and tell your doctor.
  • People with an iodine or seaweed allergy.
